Mathematics builds upon itself; without a firm grasp of lower-level mathematics, the higher concepts become a lot harder than they need to be. Starting with Pre-Algebra, this foundation is formed and carries on through college Algebra. This class will help students master those foundational concepts that will help them succeed in high school-level math and beyond. This course will guide students through many types of numbers and operations, focusing on how math can be applied to our everyday lives.
During the in-class portion of the course, the teacher will be providing dynamic instructions on new topics and give students opportunities to practice and master problems.
This course uses Aleks Math, allowing students to work at their own pace while doing independent work yet ensuring they move through the entire curriculum by the end of the year.
Aleks math provides "Knowledge Checks" which periodically evaluates the student's comprehension. Knowledge checks also identify gaps in students' knowledge from foundational topics and provide instruction in those specific areas to keep students from falling behind. Aleks, in conjunction with a dedicated teacher, allows students to practice known concepts and learn new topics confidently.
Students must be in the habit of bringing paper and pencils to write down their work. It will be helpful for them in later topics and for review.
Recommended track for mastering skills (focus on 7th grade standards)

An Introduction to Becky Duncan:
Hello! I'm Becky Duncan, an art, nature, and science lover raised in the small town of Penryn, California. I attended the local K-8 school, and then Del Oro High School in Loomis where I played soccer and basketball, and tended to my goats, chickens, ducks, dogs, and cats (as I still do today). I studied neurobiology, physiology, and behavior at the University of California, Davis, and went on to obtain my Master of Arts in Science Writing from Johns Hopkins University. While doing graduate courses online, I also earned a certificate in science illustration and began my small art business creating watercolors inspired by nature. I've worked in science education for several years; I had the opportunity to guide students in the Greater Sacramento Area on environmental field trips through a nonprofit organization, and I’ve worked on as a creator and editor on the marketing team for an education company that makes learning equipment for classrooms. I love finding ways to combine art and science, and I try to promote curiosity and kindness in everything I do.
I’m very excited for the privilege to join the Bluedoor community!
