Description

Foundations in Language Arts (9-10): This Language Arts class is built for students in 9th through 12th grade. The focus for this course is on essay writing, covering argument, narrative, and research essays. Students will read poetry, short stories, scripts, and novel excerpts, with the expectation that they will comprehend each topic and form an opinion on it, using evidence in the text to support an argument.  This is a-g course and will cover the common core standards for this age range, following the assignments listed in a-g syllabi. This class will utilize intriguing material and approaches to help engage students and encourage them to write confidently, both in an academic and creative style. Expectations include attention in class, the ability to format in MLA style (with guidance), and at least two hours of at home study per week, as well as daily at home reading. Students must be able to type assignments and turn them in online.

Books will be provided by instructor:

Fall: Out of the Silent Planet, Jane Eyre, and various plays/poetry

Spring: The Scarlet Letter, Frankenstein and various plays/short stories

To avoid students duplicating course work through 9th and 10th grade, this class operates on a two year rotating curriculum. Additionally, it meets all applicable standards and follows an a-g approved syllabus.
