This course is for students who want an opportunity to advance to a higher level of understanding and skill development in the visual arts. Stronger emphasis is placed on composition and the creation of original artworks. The general areas of study included in this course are a focus on art history, recognizing works and artists from different periods of art history and world cultures. Students will be expected to express their ideas in a variety of styles and methods. Students will be required to participate in class discussion, discuss works of art, critique a formal work of art, study styles of art through slides and videos, and create projects that illustrate these styles. The Elements of Art and Principles of Design while developing drawing skills and painting techniques. Studio experiences in the classroom will give students opportunities to experience a variety of media (pencil, pen, ink, charcoal, pastel, watercolor, and tempera paint) while developing student’s individual style and creative problem solving skills. Students will demonstrate their ability to respond, to analyze and to interpret their own artwork and the work of others through discussions, critiques, and writings.
Participants must be entering grades 9 to 12.
